Winter Operations Update: Provincial Road Salt Shortage

Residents may notice changes

The Municipality of Casselman is adjusting some winter maintenance practices due to a province-wide road salt shortage. Early winter conditions, frequent storms, and supply chain challenges have reduced salt availability across Ontario.

To stretch our remaining supply for the rest of the season, our crews will be using more sand-salt mixtures instead of straight salt. This helps maintain traction on icy roads while conserving materials for when they are needed most.

👀 What residents may notice

  • Roads may appear more snow-packed than usual, especially during colder periods
  • Sand improves traction but does not create bare pavement like salt often does
  • These adjustments remain within municipal service levels and align with practices across Ontario

🛑 How you can help keep roads safe

  • Allow extra travel time and drive according to conditions
  • Reduce speeds and increase following distances
  • Avoid pushing snow onto roads, sidewalks, or drainage areas
  • Follow local guidelines for bin placement on collection days
  • Respect winter parking restrictions to allow plow access

Our Public Works team is working hard to keep roads safe despite these temporary challenges.

Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and community spirit.

Together, we’ll navigate the rest of winter safely. ❄️💛
